Job Summary

The Senior Gender Officer will lead the design, coordination, implementation, and monitoring of gender-responsive interventions. This role includes capacity-building for frontline workers, engagement of men and boys in positive masculinity networks, and ensuring women and girls have consistent access to safe spaces and empowerment services.

Key Responsibilities

Program Implementation and Coordination

  • Lead the planning and implementation of gender equality and empowerment initiatives aligned with project objectives and UNICEF-supported indicators.
  • Coordinate activities in Women and Girls Safe Spaces (WGSS) to ensure delivery of integrated, age-appropriate information, services, and life skills for women and adolescent girls.
  • Oversee the rollout of digital and vocational training programs for adolescent girls, ensuring relevance and accessibility.
  • Support the design and facilitation of life skills training for adolescent girls, including health, nutrition, and immunization education.

Capacity Building and Technical Support

  • Organize and conduct training sessions for frontline workers (e.g., health, nutrition, HIV staff) on gender equality, gender-based violence (GBV) prevention, and adolescent-responsive services.
  • Develop and distribute gender equality materials and tools for use by frontline service providers.
  • Provide ongoing technical support to program staff, field teams, and implementing partners on integrating gender-sensitive and adolescent-responsive approaches into programming.

Community Engagement and Male Involvement

  • Facilitate the establishment and functioning of Men and Boys Networks to promote positive masculinity, gender equality, and protection of women's and girls’ spaces.
  • Mobilize community leaders, fathers, and male youth to engage in dialogue and awareness activities on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
  • Promote male allyship and behavioral change through community events and ongoing engagement.

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting

  • Work closely with M&E teams to ensure gender indicators are accurately tracked and reported, including:
  • Document success stories, challenges, and lessons learned to inform program adjustments and donor reporting.
  • Contribute to regular program reports, progress updates, and donor reports with disaggregated data and gender analysis.

Safeguarding and Gender-Based Violence Prevention

  • Ensure all activities are aligned with child protection, safeguarding, and GBV prevention guidelines.
  • Identify and refer GBV cases through appropriate channels, in coordination with protection teams and case workers.
  • Promote a safe, confidential, and respectful environment for all participants, particularly adolescent girls and women.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Gender Studies, Social Sciences, Public Health, Development Studies, or a related field.

Experience

  • At least 3 years of progressively responsible experience in gender equality, women’s empowerment, or GBV programming.
  • Strong background in community-based gender initiatives, adolescent girl programming, or male engagement work.

Skills and Competencies

  • In-depth knowledge of gender equality, positive masculinity, and adolescent empowerment frameworks.
  • Strong facilitation and capacity-building skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Strong organizational and report-writing abilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and gender-sensitive data collection tools.
