Job Descriptions:

The Senior Pediatrician will serve as the principal technical authority on child health, nutrition, and immunization services under the WADAN outreach initiative. This high-level, field-based position entails the provision of advanced, specialist pediatric care across rural outreach health camps. The incumbent will oversee clinical diagnostics, treatment of pediatric diseases, nutritional interventions, and immunization campaigns, while mentoring and building capacity among SHC healthcare personnel. The role requires a results-oriented, professionally experienced medical expert with a strong commitment to enhancing child health standards, reducing pediatric morbidity and mortality, and promoting sustainable, evidence-based health practices. Willingness to undertake overnight deployments to rural and underserved areas is essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership in delivering comprehensive, quality-assured pediatric services during rural outreach health camps, in alignment with WHO, MoPH, and BPHS/EPHS protocols.
  • Provide direct pediatric consultations, including comprehensive clinical evaluations, diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up for children with acute or chronic health concerns.
  • Diagnose and manage the full spectrum of pediatric illnesses across all disease domains, including infectious and non-communicable diseases, congenital anomalies, malnutrition, and neonatal emergencies.
  • Conduct standardized nutritional assessments using MUAC, weight-for-age, and weight-for-height tools; initiate clinical management or referral for SAM/MAM cases per national protocols.
  • Deliver structured on-site mentorship and capacity building for SHC physicians, nurses, vaccinators, and nutritionists to enhance quality of pediatric care.
  • Design, implement, and monitor competency-based training programs and clinical guidelines, with emphasis on IMCI and pediatric emergency protocols.
  • Collaborate with EPI and outreach teams to strengthen routine and supplementary immunization efforts, with specific focus on identifying and reaching zero-dose children, missed beneficiaries, and vaccine-hesitant populations through strategic, data-driven community interventions.
  • Support and supervise the implementation of community-based OPV campaigns in coordination with Faith-Based Mobilizers (FBMs) and public health teams.
  • Develop, apply, and regularly review referral pathways for pediatric emergencies, ensuring stabilization and efficient transfer to higher-level care when needed.
  • Contribute to internal quality assurance mechanisms, including case reviews, clinical audits, and M&E assessments.
  • Serve as a child health advocate by engaging caregivers, local leaders, and civil society stakeholders to increase service demand and reduce harmful practices.
  • Ensure timely and accurate clinical documentation and reporting using national health information systems (HMIS/DHIS2).
  • Remain available for extended field assignments, including overnight stays, to ensure consistent coverage of underserved areas.
  • Carry out any other duties as may be reasonably assigned by the Project Supervisor or senior program leadership, consistent with the scope of the project and professional capacity.

Job Requirements:

  • Medical Doctor (MD) with postgraduate specialization in Pediatrics from a recognized academic institution.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive clinical experience in pediatric medicine.
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in malnutrition management, pediatric infectious diseases, emergency care, and immunization programming.
  • Proven experience in training, mentoring, and clinical supervision of healthcare personnel.
  • In-depth knowledge of Afghanistan’s BPHS/EPHS system, national child health policies, and WHO pediatric care standards.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills with cultural competence to work in conservative, rural communities.
  • Proficiency in digital health reporting systems, including HMIS and DHIS2.
  • Fluency in Pashto and/or Dari; working knowledge of English preferred.
