About the Role:

Under the direct supervision of the Digital Livelihood project Co-Lead, the incumbent will lead the qualitative component of a sequential mixed-methods study exploring lived experiences, constraints, risks, and feasible digital livelihood pathways for Afghan youth, women, and returnees; and refine instruments/hypotheses for the quantitative phase.

Specific Duties:

  • Develop/adjust KII and FGD guides aligned to approved research questions and framework.
  • Prepare consent scripts and qualitative field protocols consistent with ethics/safeguarding and the project data protection plan.
  • Design purposive sampling (gender × province × participant category) and coordinate recruitment with field teams.
  • Conduct/lead KIIs with ecosystem actors and facilitate gender-sensitive FGDs (gender-segregated where required).
  • Train and coach assigned enumerators on qualitative note-taking, neutral probing, consent, and safety protocols.
  • Maintain a qualitative audit trail and oversee secure handling of notes/transcripts.
  • Develop coding framework; code/analyze transcripts/notes; synthesize findings by subgroup and theme; contribute to integrated reporting.
  • Traveling to target provinces/ areas as required

Experience: Minimum 5 years in qualitative research (including tool development and analysis)

Education: Bachelor’s preferred in Social Sciences/Development Studies/Economics/Sociology/Public Policy or related (Bachelor’s with strong relevant experience may be preferred)

Other Skills:

  • Strong ethics, safeguarding, and do-no-harm practice; ability to manage sensitive topics responsibly.
  • KII/FGD design and facilitation; excellent probing/moderation; strong writing and communication.
