Job Description

Providing technical leadership, coordination, and oversight of pharmaceutical services in alignment with the BPHS standards and Ministry of Public Health Afghanistan policies. The role ensures effective planning, implementation, and monitoring of pharmacy-related activities, including essential medicine supply management, rational drug use, quality assurance, and adherence to national treatment guidelines across all supported health facilities. The coordinator works closely with provincial teams, logistics, and clinical staff to ensure uninterrupted availability of quality medicines, strengthen pharmacy systems, build staff capacity, and enhance service delivery to improve health outcomes under the BPHS framework.Providing technical leadership, coordination, and oversight of pharmaceutical services in alignment with the BPHS standards and Ministry of Public Health Afghanistan policies. Main Job/ Responsibilities

  • Lead forecasting, quantification, and coordination of procurement for medicines, medical supplies, and equipment in line with organizational procedures and BPHS requirements.
  • Ensure proper stock management systems, including accurate use of stock cards, inventory records, and electronic tools across the main office and all BPHS/EPHS-supported facilities.
  • Monitor consumption patterns and adjust supply plans to prevent stock outs, overstocking, and expiries.
  • Oversee adherence to Good Storage Practices, including appropriate storage conditions at all levels.
  • Ensure regular physical inventory counts and monthly stock reconciliation across warehouses and health facilities.
  • Implement and monitor FEFO/FIFO principles and ensure proper handling of cold-chain and controlled medicines.
  • Ensure compliance with national pharmaceutical standards and Ministry of Public Health Afghanistan policies.
  • Verify the quality of medicines, including batch numbers, expiry dates, and proper documentation.
  • Report and manage adverse drug reactions, product quality issues, and recalls in coordination with relevant authorities.
  • Coordinate timely and efficient distribution of pharmaceuticals to all supported health facilities.
  • Promote rational drug use in accordance with national treatment guidelines and BPHS standards.
  • Provide technical support to prescribers and pharmacy staff on updated clinical and pharmaceutical guidelines.
  • Ensure proper dispensing practices at provincial and health facility levels.
  • Prepare and submit accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual pharmaceutical reports, including donor-specific requirements.
  • Maintain complete and accurate documentation of all pharmaceutical transactions in both electronic and manual systems.
  • Supervise pharmacy staff, provide ongoing technical guidance, and conduct capacity-building activities.
  • Participate in recruitment, performance appraisal, and professional development of pharmacy personnel.
  • Coordinate closely with procurement, logistics, and health program teams to ensure smooth implementation of pharmacy services.
  • Strengthen pharmacy management systems, including tools such as mSupply and quality improvement standards (HQIP).
  • Participate in relevant technical meetings and contribute to continuous improvement of pharmaceutical services under BPHS.
  • Report any safeguarding, misconduct, or grievance concerns following MHCO and UN procedures.
  • Maintain high standards of professionalism, confidentiality, ethical behavior, and responsiveness to complaints or feedback.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy (B.Pharm) required; Master’s (M.Pharm) preferred.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in pharmacy management system.
  • Experience in BPHS pharmacy, NGO programs, or donor-funded projects is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of pharmaceutical supply chain systems and MDS.
  • Excellent communication, reporting, and leadership skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and inventory software.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Fluency in Dari and Pashto; good command of English (written & spoken).
