Job Description
Technical
- Be able to assess the IYCF needs for infants and young children under the age of 2 years and give appropriate referral or individual or group counselling.
- Register and undertake growth monitoring and promotion (GMP) including measure weight, height, age and check oedema of all children under two years of age.
- Provide appropriate IYCF counselling to caregivers with infants and young children under the age of 2 years, this includes being able to give one-on-one counselling on the following topics:
- Breastfeeding: exclusive <6 months age and continued breastfeeding until the at least the age of 2
- Complementary feeding: timely, adequate, safe and properly fed
- Appropriate action on the non-breastfed infant
- Hygiene
- Recognize the general danger signs in infants and young children under the age of 2 years and refer to a nurse at the nutrition centre for further assessment or to the nearest health facility in the absence of a nurse.
- Assess enrolled lactating women for maternal mental health issues and refer to the appropriate mental health service if needed
- Liaise with the appropriate community volunteers to ensure that the volunteers can do appropriate active case finding for infant and young children under the age of 2 where the caregiver needs MIYCN counselling
- Give supportive supervision and capacity build the MIYCN and education volunteers at the nutrition site on technical MIYCN matters
- Facilitates sessions on nutrition, health and hygiene good practices to pregnant and lactating women and caregiver of malnourished children attending the Out-patient Therapeutic Programme (OTP) sites
- Prepare daily/weekly reports on activities and any necessary reports as requested.
- Attend training and team meeting as requested.
- Conduct complementary feeding demonstration.
- To Share the GMP defaulter cases list with N-Assistant and follow up.
- Any other duties assigned by line manager.
Quality Management
- Ensure good hygiene standards are kept within nutrition facilities
- Ensure accurate record keeping for reporting
- Compile MIYCN specific reports as required
Coordination and External Representation
- Ensure good coordination between the nutrition team and other health and nutrition staff and community and site volunteers in the same catchment area
Job Requirements
Non-negotiable:
Education:
- High School
- Training in MIYCN or IYCF(-E)
Work Experience:
- Minimum 3 year's work experience in Nutrition Counselling
Languages:
- Written and spoken Dari and Pashtu
- Ability to write basic English (names, numbers etc)
Skills:
- People skills, able to build trust and repour with those needing MIYCN counselling
- Attention to detail and thorough
- Analyzing information

Work Experience:
- Experience working experience with a humanitarian organization
- Experience working in a nutrition program
