OHW is operating since 2007 in the country with active membership with the national clusters and international donor agencies in Afghanistan including SWABAC, ACBAR, AICS, BAAG, AWN and most of the national and international Clusters operates based in Afghanistan.

Job Descriptions:

Job Summary:
The Nutrition Nurse & Counselor will provide comprehensive nutrition assessment, management, and counseling for children under five years and pregnant and lactating women (PLWs), ensuring compliance with national IMAM and MIYCN guidelines. This role includes direct clinical support, data management, nutrition education, and coordination with community-based services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct nutrition screening for all children 0–59 months and PLWs.
  • Perform appetite tests for SAM and MAM children before program registration and during follow-up.
  • Classify children under five into Well-Nourished, Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM), and Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM).
  • Monitor growth of children under two and provide MIYCN counseling to caregivers.
  • Register beneficiaries in OPD-SAM, OPD-MAM (children and PLWs) and follow them until program exit, according to IMAM guidelines.
  • Fill admission cards for OPD-SAM, OPD-MAM children, and OPD-MAM PLWs.
  • Conduct nutrition education sessions for caregivers of malnourished children.
  • Ensure accurate and regular collection of nutrition data at the health facility level.
  • Develop and maintain a nutrition data management system for all tools and reporting.
  • Distribute therapeutic foods (RUTF, RUSF, Super Cereal Plus/LNS) according to treatment protocols.
  • Conduct timely appetite tests for malnourished children.
  • Ensure adherence to IMAM and MIYCN guidelines in all interventions.
  • Conduct food demonstration sessions at health facilities.
  • Prepare and submit weekly, biweekly, and monthly nutrition reports, including stock updates.
  • Lead nutrition team during quarterly MUAC screening campaigns.
  • Coordinate with community screeners and mobilizers for defaulter tracing and active case finding.
  • Provide psychosocial referrals for mothers of malnourished children.
  • Ensure proper discharge of children and PLWs according to national protocols.
  • Maintain accurate records of all nutrition activities, including forms, cards, registration books, and tally sheets.
  • Collect, compile, and submit nutrition statistics regularly.
  • Maintain inventory and track nutrition commodities and medical supplies.
  • Contribute to monthly health education planning and conduct education sessions.

Job Requirements:

Diploma/Certificate in Nursing with verified exit exam.

Minimum 2 years of post-graduate experience in nutrition or relevant field (IMAM & MIYCN preferred).

Experience providing psychosocial counseling.

Experience working in remote or mobile health and nutrition settings.

Residency in project area is an asset.

Familiarity with local context and communities is preferred.

Fluent in Pashto and Dari (oral and written).
