About Community based humanitarian and development organization (CBHDO):

Community Based Humanitarian & Development Organization (CBHDO) is an Afghan non-governmental organization established in 2020, committed to supporting vulnerable and marginalized communities across Afghanistan. CBHDO delivers programs in Child Protection, Education, WASH, Health, Emergency Response, Nutrition, and Livelihoods.

CBHDO is partnering with Save the Children International (SCI) to implement the project “Child Protection Assistance for Vulnerable Populations Affected by the Earthquake in Eastern Region.” This project aims to provide lifesaving child protection services, psychosocial support, WASH facilities, and education support for earthquake-affected children and caregivers in Kunar Province.

Job Descriptions:

Under the supervision of the Project Coordinator and in close coordination with SCI WASH team, the WASH Assistant will support all WASH-related activities assigned to CBHDO in the project workplan.

1. WASH in CCC/CFS

  • Support the installation and maintenance of 2 WASH packages in Child Friendly Spaces (latrines, handwashing stations, water points).
  • Ensure regular cleaning, waste management, and safe water availability.
  • Conduct daily inspections to ensure CFS WASH facilities meet child-friendly and gender-sensitive standards.

2. WASH in Temporary Learning Spaces (TLS)

  • Assist in establishing WASH facilities in 15 TLS, including gender-segregated latrines, handwashing points, and solid waste collection areas.
  • Monitor functionality and coordinate with field staff for repairs and replenishment.

3. Hygiene Promotion

  • Conduct hygiene promotion sessions for children and caregivers attending CFS and TLS.
  • Deliver key messages related to handwashing, personal hygiene, safe water handling, sanitation, and menstrual hygiene (for older girls).
  • Support the distribution of hygiene kits and maintain distribution documentation.

4. Coordination & Community Engagement

  • Work with community mobilizers, CFS facilitators, and school committees to promote safe hygiene behavior.
  • Engage community elders and local leaders to strengthen WASH awareness and ownership.

5. Monitoring, Reporting & Documentation

  • Record WASH facility inspections, maintenance needs, and session attendance sheets.
  • Submit weekly and monthly reports to the Project Coordinator.
  • Provide input to MEAL teams during monitoring visits and support feedback mechanisms.

6. Safeguarding & Compliance

  • Ensure all activities comply with CBHDO and SCI safeguarding policies.
  • Report any child safeguarding or PSEA concerns immediately.

Job Requirements:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, WASH Engineering, Social Sciences, or relevant field (required).
  • Training in hygiene promotion, WASH in emergencies, or related certification (preferred).

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of experience working in WASH programs with NGOs or humanitarian organizations.
  • Experience establishing or supporting WASH facilities in community-based settings (CFS, schools, TLS, IDP sites).
  • Experience conducting hygiene promotion sessions, community awareness, or WASH assessments.

Skills & Competencies

  • Knowledge of WASH standards, hygiene behavior change, and WASH in emergencies.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and community engagement skills.
  • Ability to work independently in field conditions and manage multiple tasks.
  • Familiarity with humanitarian response standards (SPHERE preferred).
  • Fluency in Pashto and Dari; basic English is an asset.
  • Strong cultural sensitivity and ability to work respectfully with communities.
