The Organization for Humanitarian Assistance (OHA) is a non-profit, non-governmental, and non-political organization based in Afghanistan, founded on January 12, 1994. Job Description
Under the overall supervision of the Senior/Program Associate and direct supervision of the health facility in charge/Team Leader, and administrative supervision of relevant Heads of Sub Office, the Incumbent will assist in ensuring basic medical screening is carried out, particularly in the areas of reproductive, maternal and child health care. Critical medical cases will be referred to additional services through partners, the government, and private hospital partners.
The midwife is expected to carry out her duties in accordance with the strictest ethical standards, building and maintaining partnerships with the government, international organizations, and non-governmental agencies, and with due respect for gender and socio-cultural sensitivities. Deployment areas may include IDP settlements in rural or remote areas within the project scope.
Duties and Responsibilities:-
- Identifies patient care requirements for patients and ensures that their needs are met equally.
- Directs special attention to pregnant women and advises them on the necessary check-ups during antenatal, childbirth and post-natal care and family planning.
- Mobilize pregnant and lactating women to ensure their children under five receive routine immunizations and encourage these women to receive the Td vaccine themselves.
- Support vaccinators and community mobilisers in implementing community engagement activities and delivering vaccination services.
- Ensure that defaulter tracing, as well as antenatal and postnatal care (ANC/PNC) registers, are consistently updated to maintain an accurate referral mechanism with the vaccination unit at the service delivery point.
- Assists the patients in understanding their condition, the necessary medication with dose intervals and other doctors’ recommendations. She will educate patients, and with the consent of the patient, their friends and family important self-care skills; the midwife will also answer relevant questions
- Assists the Medical Doctor in conducting health examinations by conducting history taking, measurements, basic treatments, medicine management and dispensing, immunization and collecting medical reports, as well as patient follow-up and specimen collection when required.
- Explain medical procedures to the patients/beneficiaries whilst working in a compassionate environment.
- Assisting with health education, raising awareness among community people, especially women of childbearing age, pregnant and lactating women, alongside the vaccinators, nutrition nurse, and community mobilization team.
- Assist Medical Doctors in identifying priority health needs and other activities, including regular disease outbreak monitoring, collecting statistical information, taking part in health awareness campaigns, etc.
- Regularly maintains and updates the record of patient care and other information related to patients. Assist medical doctors in preparing the daily report.
- Guides and assists the Queue Manager/Support Staff in patient triage, infection control and prevention, patient counseling, hygiene promotion/cleanliness, etc.
- Assists in outreach health programs, coordinates with Health NGO partners and volunteers and supports them in community health preventive activities.
- Ensures the accurate operation of delivery equipment following manual troubleshooting malfunctions; ensures that maintenance is done in a timely manner.
- Maintains a daily checklist of all medical and delivery equipment and medicines to ensure that all medical kits are ready and fully stocked, with all medical supplies organized, listed, and within the expiration period.
- Performs any other duties as may be assigned by her supervisor.
Job Requirements
Education
- Diploma in Midwifery with one year of relevant professional experience or High School Diploma with three (3) years of relevant professional experience
Experience
- Experience in relevant clinical fields.
- Previous experience in international organizations is an advantage.
- Knowledge and experience with working in the field and medical emergency department and Trauma management will be added as an advantage.
- Effectively applies knowledge of clinical skills, bedside manners, infection control, administering medication, phlebotomy, maintenance, etc.
- Adequate practical knowledge of handling child delivery and its complications
- Works effectively with local authorities, stakeholders, and beneficiaries
- Previous experience with UN agencies, INGOs, or NGOs is an advantage.
- Knowledge of local health systems and community health dynamics in Kandahar.
Skills & Competencies

- Fluency in Pashto is required; Dari is an advantage; basic English preferred.
