About AKHS-A (Aga Khan Health Service-Afghanistan)

Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) is one of the most comprehensive private, not‐for‐profit health care systems in the developing world with community health programs in large geographical areas in Central and South Asia, as well as in East Africa.

The Aga Khan Health Services, Afghanistan (AKHS, A) was established in 2003 as part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). AKHS, A provides health care services mainly on behalf of the government including the Ministry of Public Health’s of Afghanistan’s Basic Package of Health Services (BPHS) and Essential Package of Hospital Services (EPHS). AKHS, A is unique both in scale and scope, delivering critical health services along the continuum of care, from Community Health Workers (CHWs) to ISO certified hospital facilities.

AKHS, A is currently implementing healthcare services in Bamyan, Baghlan, Badakhshan, Kabul and Takhar provinces. The agency’s scope of work includes the provision of primary and secondary healthcare, preventive and curative medical care, Nursing and Midwifery education, Human Resources Development and Hospital Management. As BPHS and EPHS implementer, AKHS, A provides technical support as well as capacity building of health personnel, immunization services, nutrition trainings and the training of Community Health Nurses and Community Health Midwives.

AKHS, A draws on internal and other donor fundings to continue supplementary and complementary support to the national health system. Moreover, AKHS, A has introduced innovations, including, expansions of e-Health services, e-learning initiatives, and cross border arrangements. To promote healthy environment, AKHS, A is also implementing net zero and greenhouse gas emission initiatives.

Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily visits of Inpatients, update patient assessment, documentation and progress notes.
  • Leading regular case discussions during visits and build the capacity of attending MDs on bedside practices.
  • Run Outpatient clinic on a regular basis.
  • Regularly visit and assess all newborns in the hospital
  • Attend Pediatric emergency cases when necessary and be on 24 hrs. call.
  • Carry out emergency Pediatric procedures.
  • Ensure complete discharge, referral and feedback procedures for patients
  • Counsel patients and relatives on health management.
  • Maintain regular contacts with heads of other departments to ensure harmonization of patients’ management.
  • Review and develop appropriate policies and procedures for patients’ health care to formulate best practice guidelines based on EPHS.
  • Ensure timely availability of required support services in the process of treating patients, particularly when referred to other specialists.
  • Liaise with other consultants on handling specialized cases in provision of patients’ health care.  
  • Responsible for presenting and distributing these reports to appropriate users
  • Prepare timely and accurate medical reports, audits and mortality reviews, responsible for presenting and distributing these reports to appropriate users.
  • Ensure medical records activities are effectively implemented
  • Ensure hospital standards and other quality systems are effectively implemented.
  • Ensure proper implementation of IPC practices.
  • Ensure proper implementation of Safe Care Quality improvement plan.
  • Ensure proper implementation of Rational Use of Medicine (RMU).
  • Ensure rational use of hospital resources.
  • Conduct regular conferences and actively participate in committee meetings and morning reports.
  • Any other duties assigned by Head of Department

Ensure optimum staff performance with an emphasis on customer service and delivery of quality patient care:

  • Teach other health care providers/MDs about specific techniques of medical services.
  • Ensure effective management of wards, OPD clinics and other units of relevant clinical departments.
  • Observe and comply with environmental health, occupational safety and Infection Prevention measures.

Play a role in the growth and sustainability of the institution:

  • Create, uphold and promote a positive hospital image.
  • Provide professional guidance to facilitate growth and development of the Doctors and institutions.
  • Initiate and participate in clinical research activities if needed.
  • Participate in clinical governance, medical and clinical audit activities.
  • Ensure effective utilization of resources

  • Maintain a warm and friendly relationship with patients, employees, associates, customers and suppliers.
  • Maintain an atmosphere of acceptance and support within the department

Set individual/personal goals to enable effective management of the department

  • Identify areas for personal and professional growth.
  • Communicate to your immediate supervisor your developmental needs.
  • Participate constructively during appraisals, and be willing to give and take constructive criticism, when necessary, for professional growth.

Reporting:

You are to report to the head of the pediatric department, who can also assign any other responsibilities to you in addition to the above prescribed duties.

Job Requirements

  • Education: Medical Doctor with Post Graduate Medical Education Certificate in pediatric medicine from a reputable institution. NPR, BLS and PALS Certified.
  • Master trainer from Post graduate program of pediatric field is highly preferred.
  • Work Experience: At least 3 years of experience working as pediatrician in pediatric department, Neonatal intensive Care unit and Therapeutic food unit

Skills:

  • Good computer skill in word, excel, MS office, 
  • Good spoken and written English language skills 
  • Good coordination skills 
  • Able to work independently and can take initiative 
  • Flexible team player

Other Technical Skills:

  • Having basic surgical skills will be an advantage.
  • Experience in training other Drs, Midwives and Nurses
