Afghan Family Guidance Association (AFGA) is an Afghan non-governmental, not-for-profit and non-political organization established in 1968. Alongside the Ministry of Public Health, AFGA has been working in the field of Reproductive Health since its inception. AFGA is a fully accredited member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and an important partner of UNFPA.

A committed team of more than 600 experts are working in 11 provinces of Afghanistan to achieve AFGA goals and objectives. AFGA provides health services to the most vulnerable and hard to reach communities through over 140 service delivery points

Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The FHH backup midwife will be responsible for in any FHH out of 15 operational AFGA FHHs in Herat province in case of regular midwife absence for any reason( sick leave, maternity leave, training participation, resignation and other)
  • To provide skilled birth attendant services to the mothers who attend the health facility, during her worktime.
  • Provide at least four-time ANC services for each pregnant women during the whole period of pregnancy according to the MoPH guidelines.
  • Teach danger signs of pregnancy, delivery and postpartum women to each mother during pregnancy and post-partum phases.
  • Provide advice to pregnant women and mother in laws about delivery plan and giving birth at health facility.
  • Provide Postnatal Care (PNC) services to mother and newborn at least four times after delivery.
  • Advice mothers on breast feeding and the importance of colostrum.
  • Advice mothers on newborn and SBA women about vaccination
  • Provide counselling on personal hygiene for mother and the newborn advice to mothers on their own nutrition.
  • Provide counselling on modern contraceptive methods.
  • Provision of the modern contraceptive health items available at health facility.    
  • Perform other tasks -within area of expertise- as requested by the supervisor.              

Job Requirements

  • Culturally flexibility and respect multi-cultural environment.
  • Attending FHHs in Herat province during regular midwife absence for any reason.
  • Flexible for any unplanned assignment
  • Excellent skills of problem solving and decision making 
  • Strong communication skills
  • Technical skills to provide effective safe motherhood services.
  • Graduated from midwifery institute with at least two-year work experience in related field.
  • Fluency in spoken and written Dari and Pashtu is a requirement. English Language skills is a plus point.
