Over the past few years, Afghanistan has witnessed a relative improvement in security and stability across much of the country. This has allowed humanitarian actors like INTERSOS to maintain uninterrupted access and expand services in areas that were previously hard to reach. Despite this progress, the humanitarian situation remains critical, with millions of Afghans continuing to face acute vulnerabilities due to prolonged economic hardship, natural disasters, and limited access to essential services.

In 2025, more than half of the population is in need of humanitarian assistance, with food insecurity, child malnutrition, and displacement remaining key concerns. Natural disasters, such as floods and recent earthquakes, have further compounded the needs of already struggling communities.

INTERSOS continues to operate through a community-based approach with field bases in Kabul, Kandahar, and Zabul, delivering primary healthcare, nutrition, and protection services with a focus on women, children, and persons with disabilities. The organization enjoys strong community acceptance and collaborates closely with relevant national authorities, including maintaining the full participation of female staff in all activities.

While the operational environment is largely stable and conducive, funding shortfalls and systemic barriers such as restrictions on financial flows and administrative bottlenecks continue to impact the scope and scale of humanitarian response. Sustained support is crucial to ensure the continuity of life-saving services and to address the urgent needs of Afghanistan’s most vulnerable populations

To provide safe, high-quality nursing and nutritional care to children admitted to the Therapeutic Feeding Unit (TFU) for severe acute malnutrition (SAM), in accordance with national nutrition protocols, medical guidelines, infection prevention and control standards, and organizational procedures. The position is responsible for the assessment, treatment, monitoring, and follow-up of patients to support recovery and improve nutritional and clinical outcomes.

Duties and Responsibilities:

·       Assess and admit children with severe acute malnutrition according to national protocols and SC/TFU admission criteria.

·       Conduct anthropometric and clinical assessments, including weight, height/length, MUAC, oedema, vital signs, and nutritional status.

·       Provide nursing care, prescribed medications, and clinical interventions in accordance with medical prescriptions and protocols.

·       Monitor patients' clinical and nutritional progress and promptly identify and report any deterioration or complications.

·       Provide therapeutic feeding according to the child's weight, clinical condition, and approved nutrition protocols.

·       Insert and manage nasogastric (NG) tubes when indicated and monitor for feeding-related complications.

·       Promote and support breastfeeding and provide caregivers with appropriate nutrition, health, hygiene, and feeding counselling.

·       Participate in daily medical rounds, case management, referrals, and discharge procedures.

·       Maintain accurate and timely patient records, registers, treatment charts, feeding records, and other required documentation.

·       Monitor treatment outcomes, weight gain, length of stay, morbidity, mortality, and other key nutrition indicators.

·       Ensure proper use, availability, and accountability of medicines, medical supplies, feeding materials, and equipment.

·       Maintain hygiene, infection prevention and control, aseptic practices, and cleanliness of the SC/TFU.

·       Provide effective handover and maintain clear communication with medical, nutrition, and other multidisciplinary team members.

·       Participate in staff meetings, training, health/nutrition education sessions, and capacity-building activities.

·       Support the preparation of weekly and monthly TFU/SC reports and contribute to data analysis and programme improvement.

·       Identify operational or clinical challenges, report them to the supervisor, and contribute to practical solutions.

·       Ensure all activities are implemented in accordance with national guidelines, organizational procedures, and humanitarian standards.

●        Nursing/ Midwifery certificate is required.

●        2+ years of relevant work experience. Experience in CMAM is an advantage

●        Pashto and Dari skills are required; English is preferable.

●        Work experience in Health as emergency response projects is preferable.

●        Previous experience working for an international NGO is preferable.

●        Commitment to INTERSOS principles.

●        Comply with all relevant INTERSOS policies and procedures.

●        Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to effectively present information and respond appropriately to questions from supervisor in the field.

●        Ability and willingness to travel and stay overnight at service delivery point.
