Solar Engineer

Established in 2006 through a partnership between the Government of Afghanistan, the Government of France, La Chaîne de l’Espoir, and the Aga Khan Development Network, FMIC has become Afghanistan’s leading tertiary healthcare institution and a regional centre of excellence. To design, develop, install, and maintain solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and electrical infrastructure. The successful candidate will be responsible for system design, technical evaluations, project execution, troubleshooting, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.

A Solar Operations and Maintenance Engineer manages the daily performance, upkeep, and troubleshooting of a completed 1 MW solar plant. Their goal is to maximize energy yield, ensure system reliability, and meet performance guarantees to protect the financial return of the project

Main Roles and Responsibilites 

Periodic Responsibilities 

1.      Design solar PV systems for residential, commercial, and industrial projects.

2.      Perform site assessments and feasibility studies.

3.      Prepare system layouts, single-line diagrams (SLDs), and technical specifications.

4.      Calculate energy production, system sizing, and performance analysis.

5.      Select appropriate solar modules, inverters, batteries, and balance-of-system components.

6.      Monitor system performance and recommend optimization measures.

7.      Conduct commissioning and testing of solar installations  

8.      Electrical Engineering.

9.      Design and review electrical distribution systems.

10.  Prepare electrical drawings, load calculations, and cable sizing.

11.  Ensure compliance with electrical codes, standards, and regulations.

12.  Troubleshoot electrical faults and provide corrective actions.

13.  Coordinate installation, testing, and maintenance activities.

14.  Support power quality analysis and electrical safety assessments.

15.  Project Management & Coordination

16.  Coordinate with clients, contractors, suppliers, and project teams.

17.  Prepare technical reports, BOQs, and project documentation.

18.  Monitor project schedules, budgets, and quality standards.

19.  Provide technical support during procurement and construction phases.

20.  Ensure adherence to HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) requirements

Regular Responsibilities:

The regular responsibilities are not limited to:

1-      Plant Performance Monitoring & Reporting: The foundation of O&M engineering revolves around data analysis and continuous surveillance of the solar arrays.

2-      System Surveillance: Actively monitor PMS (power management system) or solar monitoring platforms to watch inverters, strings, and energy production.

3-      Yield Deviations Analysis: Identify production losses by checking if weather conditions correlate with the daily generation metrics.

4        Performance Reporting: Compile technical data for monthly and annual performance reports detailing plant metrics, downtime, and financial impact for stakeholders.

4-       Preventive & Predictive Maintenance (PM/PdM)

5-      Routine care designed to prevent major failures and prolong the lifespan of the 1 MW infrastructure.

6-      Equipment Inspections: Regularly inspect electrical switchgear, inverters, and mounting structures.

7-      Thermal Imaging: Utilize handheld or drone infrared (IR) thermography to detect hot spots and micro-cracks before components fail.

8-      Module Cleaning: Advise on module cleaning cycles (e.g., in dusty environments like Kabul) to prevent soiling losses.

9-       Corrective Maintenance & Troubleshooting: When components break down or the plant trips, the O&M engineer steps in to minimize downtime.

10-  Fault Finding: Diagnose inverter error codes, ground faults, and wiring degradation.

11-  Component Replacement: Manage the replacement of damaged inverters, solar panels, or broken breakers.

12-  Coordinate with electrical technicians or OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) support to resolve highly technical issues.

13-   Health, Safety & Compliance: Ensuring the site is safe and strictly complies with local grid and regulatory standards.

14-  Safety Protocols: Implement Safe Systems of Work (SSoW) and manage Permits-to-Work for high-voltage maintenance.

15-  Grid Liaison: Coordinate with the local utility or grid operator regarding plant shutdowns or grid faults.

Qualifications and Requirements

Bachelor of engineering/ Bachelor of technology/ Bachelor in Renewable Energy.

Job Specifications

Academic & professional qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or related field & graduated from recognized universities that are verified by the Ministry of Higher Education of Afghanistan.

Strong electrical, electronics, and solar engineering.
