Job Description

Job Purpose:

The position is responsible for providing frontline ophthalmic, emergency, and outpatient support services in a hospital setting during night. The role includes assisting patient registration, basic clinical and diagnostic procedures, medication dispensing, patient preparation for surgery, documentation, and financial recordkeeping.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:

  1. Provide emergency patient care during non-official hours in coordination with the on-call doctor, including:
    • Register emergency patients.
    • Assess and record patients' visual acuity.
    • Perform routine clinical examinations and provide nursing care for admitted patients within the treatment and observation unit.
    • Prepare the operating theatre and required equipment for emergency procedures.
    • Provide appropriate guidance and information to emergency patients and their attendants.
  1. Perform ophthalmic and basic clinical procedures in the Outpatient Department (OPD), including tear duct irrigation, intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement, blood pressure (BP) monitoring, and other diagnostic procedures as required, ensuring the use of sterile equipment and adherence to infection prevention and control standards.
  2. Accurately and legibly recording all findings and recommendations on the patient’s card.
  3. Dispense medication to patients according to the doctor's prescription and the approved price list.
  4. Preparing financial records and submitting them to the NECT cashier the following day.
  5. Demonstrate courteous, respectful, and professional conduct when interacting with patients, attendants, colleagues, and visitors, while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to medical ethics and hospital policies.
  6. Promptly report operational, clinical, or administrative issues to the line manager and contribute to initiatives aimed at improving the quality and efficiency of hospital services.
  7. Prepare patients for surgical procedures prior to the commencement of operating theatre activities, ensuring all pre-operative requirements have been completed.
  8. Wear the designated hospital uniform at all times while on duty and maintain it in a clean, neat, and professional condition.
  9. Perform any other duties assigned by the line manager that are consistent with the nature and responsibilities of the position.

Job Requirements

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

Educational Background:

  • Diploma in Nursing from a recognized nursing institution

Professional Experience:

  • At least two (2) years of relevant professional experience in nursing and patient care.
  • Previous experience in ophthalmic nursing or an eye care setting is desirable.
  • Experience in emergency patient care is considered an asset.

Skills:

  • Good spoken communication skills in Dari and Pashto.
  • Basic written and spoken English proficiency.
  • Ability to provide basic emergency care and first aid.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally and compassionately with patients and colleagues.
  • Ability to maintain accurate patient records and handle confidential information with discretion.
