Job Description
About Household Economy Analysis (HEA) Baseline Activity
Household Economy Analysis (HEA) Baseline Activity is a field-based assessment to understand how different population groups make a living. Through structured interviews and surveys conducted within specific livelihood zones across Afghanistan, field teams will gather detailed information on how households obtain food and income, how they spend their resources, and what assets and coping options they rely on throughout the year. By analyzing this data, analysts will build a comprehensive picture of local economic systems and seasonal patterns, creating a baseline that represents typical livelihood conditions. This baseline will then become the foundation for modelling how future shocks—such as drought, conflict, or market disruptions—can affect household access to food and income, allowing partners to anticipate changes in food security and support timely, evidence-based responses.
Key Responsibilities:
- Attend a 6-day HEA baseline training and participate actively, asking questions when anything is not clearly understood.
- In the field, introduce the HEA survey objectives and survey data collectors to villagers and the village leaders in a clear and respectful way. Explain what will take place during the HEA survey and do not raise expectations.
- Implement the HEA interviews at community and household level. Ask questions concisely in the local language, interpreters will be available if needed.
- Record the data carefully, ensuring that the principles of rigor are adhered to and that the forms/spreadsheets are filled in fully, whether on paper or tablet.
- Verify completed interviews before leaving the village. Form 4 interviews are finished only when data collectors are sure that they have cross-checked the data to ensure that the livelihood story is logical and that the calculations “add up” (food sources equal minimum food energy required; and income balances with expenditure). In Form 3 interviews wealth group breakdowns and asset profiles must be completed together with a timeline, seasonal calendar, production data and coping strategies.
- Attend feedback sessions before or after daily fieldwork as instructed by team leader.
- Visit local markets during the HEA village survey to collect basic market price data.
- Safeguard survey tools (tablets; calculators; interview forms and pen/pencil).
- Submit interview forms to the team leader at the end of each day for review and verification.
- Collaborate with data collectors, team leader and translators.
- Attend mini and final analysis sessions and participate actively.
- Assist in any other task that is determined necessary by the HEA Team Leader to make the survey successful.
