Job Descriptions:

Role Purpose:

Responsible to lead and support private sector engagement initiatives aimed at empowering marginalized communities, especially women. This role is reserved for a senior-level Afghan candidate who has a deep understanding of Afghanistan’s socio-economic and cultural context, especially the challenges faced by Afghan women in business.

The coordinator will play a central role in designing, implementing, and advising on livelihoods and entrepreneurship programs. The Coordinator will work closely with local community, especially women, helping them build market-relevant skills, launch and manage small-scale businesses, identifying opportunities for private sector engagement and other income generation activities to support the food security and livelihood condition household and connect with value chains and markets.

Commitments for women’s economic empowerment, passion and entrepreneurial acumen of Private Sector Coordinator is expected to help establishing businesses in fragile contexts.  

 

Key Working Relationships (horizontal & vertical):

  • Reports to: Food Security and Livelihood Programme Manager

 

Key responsibilities:

  • Program Design & Implementation
    • Develop and advise on context-sensitive, market-driven project activities that promote women-led entrepreneurship.
    • Identify and design scalable livelihood opportunities tailored to the local context and market demands.
    • Lead the implementation of small business support programs targeting vulnerable and marginalized households, especially women.
  • Capacity Building
    • Conduct practical trainings and mentoring sessions for women on entrepreneurship, business planning, market access, and financial literacy.
    • Transfer business establishment and management skills to local women, using hands-on, participatory methodologies.
  • Market Assessment & Linkages
    • Conduct regular assessments of local markets and value chains to identify viable business opportunities.
    • Facilitate connections between women entrepreneurs and suppliers, individual women beneficiaries of FSL component, buyers, cooperatives, and service providers.
    • Advocate for equitable participation of women in cooperatives, producer groups, and supply chains.
  • Strategic Advising & Reporting
    • Provide strategic advice to the program team and partners on private sector engagement and women’s economic inclusion.
    • Monitor, evaluate, and report on program activities and impact, ensuring adaptive learning and program improvement.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
    • Engage with local government, private sector actors, community leaders, and women’s groups to foster enabling environments.

Miscellaneous:

  • Comply with MEED policies and practices, especially with respect to PSEA, child protection, code of conduct, health and safety, and equality.
  • Any other tasks assigned by line manager to achieve the objectives of position

Job Requirements:

  • Experience required:
    • Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of relevant experience in the relevant field i.e. in private sector development, livelihoods, or women’s economic empowerment programs.
    • Proven experience in establishing and running small-scale businesses in the Afghanistan context.
    • Experience in training, coaching, or mentoring women entrepreneurs or small business owners.
    Skills and Competencies required:
    • Deep understanding of the cultural, economic, and gender-specific challenges faced by Afghan women.
    • Strong entrepreneurial mindset, with the ability to identify and nurture business opportunities in fragile and restrictive environments.
    • Familiarity with local markets, value chains, and business ecosystems in rural and urban Afghanistan.
    • Ability to understand and implement the tasks given by the responsible manager
    • Ability to work in a team.
    Other requirements:
    • Having high level of integrity
    • Exposure to local dynamics of Northeastern Afghanistan.
