Position Summary:
The Veterinarian under the supervision of the Project coordinator, will ensure the effective and principled implementation of livestock protection response (provision of feed, deworming campaign and delivering trainings to Beneficiaries) in Herat province of Afghanistan with frequent travel to the Zinda Jan district and villages within district and province.
The veterinarian will provide trainings to Beneficiaries and stakeholders (especially on de-worming techniques and livestock health), support and coordinate de-worming campaign and make sure planned targets are achieved. At the same time, the veterinarians will provide necessary trainings to the farmers to improve livestock management, feeding and sanitation. They will be communicating will relevant community stakeholders and pastoralists to understand the current challenges local herds face, what is their health status and what current disease outbreak are endangering them.
Veterinarian will be supporting the project team and make sure that the storage and distribution of livestock packages meet core standards common to livestock interventions (national regulations and MAIL recommendations, FAO guidelines on livestock relate interventions) and ensuring that adequate technical requirements of the engaged staff are in place and standardized, ensuring that necessary hygiene and sanitary practices are in place during the distributions and de-worming campaigns (as well during the transportation and storage of animal feed).
The Veterinarian will ensure the effective implementation of poultry farms intervention (preparing BNFs selection criteria, conducting BNFs selection assessment, ensuring quality of poultry package distributing by supplier, conducting poultry training to BNFs, coordination with livestock department of DAIL, handover poultry farm intervention) in Zinda Jan district.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The veterinarian is responsible for, but not limited to, the following work areas and duties:
1. Education and Qualifications:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent from a recognized institution.
Professional certification or additional training in livestock management or poultry farming is an asset.
2. Experience:
Minimum 3–5 years of relevant experience in veterinary practice, livestock protection, and rural development projects.
Proven experience in conducting de-worming campaigns, animal health training, and managing livestock/poultry interventions.
Experience working with NGOs or international organizations in field-based veterinary or agriculture-related programs is highly desirable.
3. Technical Skills:
Strong knowledge of veterinary practices, livestock diseases, vaccination/de-worming, and animal health monitoring.
Experience in training delivery and capacity building for farmers and community-based animal health workers (paravets).
Familiarity with national regulations, Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) standards, and FAO livestock intervention guidelines.
Understanding of poultry farming, including setup, health management, and feed protocols.
