About MEDAIR:

Medair is an international humanitarian organization established in 1988. Medair has been operating in Afghanistan since 1996 with programs mainly in the Health, Water & Sanitation, and Livelihoods sectors with significant reconstruction activities in remote areas. Current projects are Water & Sanitation, Food Security, & Disaster Risk Reduction.

An Integrated Emergency Response: Medair aims to respond to high levels of food insecurity, malnutrition, and morbidity in Tirinkot district.  The project intends to improve and extend WASH services including water supply infrastructure and hygiene practices to improve outcomes for vulnerable families.

An Integrated Emergency Response: Medair aims to respond to high levels of food insecurity, malnutrition, and morbidity in Uruzgan, which has been significantly affected by drought and conflict conditions. Building upon Medair’s decades of experience in the Central Highlands and Kandahar, the project intends to improve and extend the utilization of lifesaving preventive and curative nutrition and health services by mothers, PLWs, and children U5; to increase access to clean water, to reduce vulnerability to water-related and other preventable diseases, and to improve and increase food security for the most vulnerable families through food voucher distributions.

Job Descriptions:

Main activities:

Construction of water points and other WASH infrastructure;

  • Monitor contractors and hired labor in the construction work, with site supervision and technical supervision, according to training.
  • Creation of Water User Groups.
  • Conduct training for WUC members including WSP.
  • Selection of local mechanics and train them practically.

 

Monitor water, sanitation, and hygiene within the Medair-supported health facilities;

  • Ensure technical WASH standards are met in the Medair-supported clinics, including water supply and quality, toilets, handwashing stations, and waste management
  • Monitor safe drinking water supply including treating drinking water with Aquatabs and monitoring FRC
  • Monitor cleanliness of toilets and oversee cleaners to properly schedule and do this task
  • Monitor handwashing stations and ensure water and soap are present at all times
  • Monitor and coach medical team on proper medical waste segregation and best practices

 

Completion of monitoring, evaluation records and surveys;

  • Fully participate in carrying out surveys, including house-to-house visits and community meetings as requested.
  • Carry out monitoring visits for follow-up, after implementation.
  • Completion of survey records and site records

Give support to other staff working on Medair projects as requested.

Logistics:

  • Coordinate with WASH Manager and WASH Officer in logistics planning for the project site, ensuring the timely arrival of materials, quality of construction materials, safe storage of assets/materials, and clear up-to-date record keeping.

 

Financial management:

  • Assist in payments and incentive distributions in the communities for skilled and unskilled laborers.
  • Ensure all financial accountability is completed in a timely and correct manner.

 

Security Management:

  • Responsible for the safety and security of project assets on site of operations.
  • Employ health and safety operational approaches during all project activities.
  • Adhere to the security guidelines employed by Medair on-site, in-route, and help ensure all security procedures are followed.
  • Follow all Medair-related SOPs in project implementation.

 

External Representation:

Maintain relationships with communities, including communications related to project activities, timelines, support skilled and unskilled laborers in community contribution, and community and land use agreements.

Job Requirements:

Education:

  • Civil engineering or related department of engineering faculty
  • Conversational English 

 

Relevant experience:

  • Have at least 3 years of experience as a construction foreman or work within the WASH field
  • Adept at working with local communities.
  • Familiar with the project areas
  • Able to follow instructions, and prioritize tasks assigned.

 

Languages :

  • Literate and numerate
  • Good written and spoken Pashto
  • conversational English

 

Computer :

Basic working skills with Microsoft Office

Experience using online surveys with tablets

 

Organizational capacity:

  • comfortable negotiating with village leaders and helping them to come to decisions.
  • Honest and reliable personality

 

Teambuilding :

  • Clear communicator to teammates, willing to share information.
  • Experience working in a team
