Background

BBC Media Action Afghanistan is delivering projects on empowering local media, journalists and aid workers learn how to undertake effective communications to reach and engage with local communities. 

Job Descriptions:

Overall Purpose of the Job.

Reporting to the supervisor, the Senior  Trainer and Mentor (Radio) will be responsible for the capacity building of our women-lead and women-focused media partner stations in provinces that broadcast radio programs to affected communities and have received small operational grants The post holder will develop a detailed training plan, working with colleagues in Afghanistan and the UK to use the insights from research into training needs, and expertise on best practice in building the capacity of local media outlets. The Senior Trainer and Mentor (Radio) will implement that plan, using his or her own expertise and the skills of media trainers and consultants.  The person will also ensure the training and mentoring are in line with the deliverables under the project's small grants activities that are provided to the women-led and women-focused radio partners.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage trainers and mentors and improve their skills and abilities.
  • Identify and assess the training needs of partner organizations and propose efficient interventions.
  • Devise an overall or individualized training and mentoring tool and plan that addresses the needs and expectations of each media partner.
  • Ensure the training and mentoring plans are aligned with the deliverables under the project’s small grants activities.
  • Design and deliver capacity strengthening program for women-focused and women-run media partner stations in regional and provincial locations, as well as in Kabul.
  • Able to work directly with women journalists at local radio stations.
  • Provide regular mentoring to media partner stations to ensure they can produce high-quality content as per the needs of affected communities.
  • Travel to provinces of Afghanistan for training and mentoring purposes as and when needed.
  • Oversee all aspects of the training program, including travel arrangements for trainees and identification of media personnel to support the mentoring program.
  • Monitor the training program’s effectiveness and successes regularly, and report regularly on activities and impact.
  • Maintain a keen awareness of developments in multimedia content production and training.
  • Resolve any specific problems and tailor programs as necessary.
  • Deploy a wide variety of training methods.
  • Track and manage the training and mentoring budget.
  • Support the management of small grant activities.
  • Other tasks or responsibilities, as directed by the supervisor.

Job Requirements:

Essential skills and experience

  • An impressive track record in an editorial role as an editor, producer, or journalist specializing in radio
  • At least 4 years of media training experience and at least 6 years of experience in radio journalism.
  • Proven experience of and enthusiasm for training and mentoring.
  • Experience of leading, managing, and inspiring a team in a media and communication environment setting.
  • Experience in managing projects including budget, plans and report writing.
  • Demonstrable creative ability, with a proven track record in coming up with innovative ideas for training and content creation.
  • Familiarity with a wide range of training methods (mentoring, coaching, on-the-job, in-classroom training, e-learning, workshops, simulations, etc.)
  • Ability to record and edit audio content for radio.
  • Understanding of radio studio operations.
  • Knowledge of how radio new rooms operate.
  • Strong understanding of gender issues in the Afghanistan context
  • Fluent Pashto and or Dari written and spoken language skills.
  • Very good written and spoken English language skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to plan, multi-task, and manage time effectively.
  • Strong report writing and record-keeping ability.
  • Good IT and database skills, including experience with audio editing software and Microsoft Office.
