Turquoise Mountain is a British charity that was founded in 2006. We believe artisanal heritage matters and has the power to transform lives. We support artisans to thrive and to revitalise traditions in regions of the world where artisanal heritage is endangered, and to connect people through heritage.
Turquoise Mountain is a fast-growing organisation. Turquoise Mountain has grown from its initial office in Afghanistan to offices in Afghanistan, Myanmar, Saudi Arabia, and the Levant (Jordan and Bethlehem), and has over 400 international and local staff members worldwide. In addition, we work with thousands of artisans and varied beneficiary communities. Each operating environment is unique; our offices operate at different levels of funding, scale, maturity and face their own challenges.
Turquoise Mountain is a non-profit, non-governmental organization specializing in urban regeneration, business development, and education in traditional arts and architecture. We seek to provide jobs, skills, and a renewed sense of national pride to Afghan men and women. Since 2006 Turquoise Mountain has cleared 35,000 cubic meters of rubbish from the streets, restored or built 150 historic and community buildings, created a charity supplementary course for children and a charity clinic, and installed water, electricity and sanitation through the historic traditional craft neighborhood of Murad Khani in the old city of Kabul. It has created the internationally accredited Institute for Afghan Arts & Architecture, training the next generation of craftsmen and women in woodwork, jewelry and gem cutting, calligraphy and miniature painting, and ceramics. Finally, it has sold over US$ 7,000,000 of Afghan artisan products internationally.
Context
Turquoise Mountain has recently started works to establish a female only workshop space to support female artisans and enterprises to study, produce and sell their products which include jewellery, Islamic calligraphy, miniature painting. The workshop will operate as a female-only artisan workshop and business incubator hub focused on jewellery and other artisanal products. In this regard, TM seeks to engage a suitable female candidate to coordinate the overall female workshop centre.
