Job Descriptions:

Project Background

The project is in line with BHA's mission to save lives, alleviate human suffering and reduce the impact of disasters by helping people in need become more independent, and the Afghanistan Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) 2023.

The program is designed around the following main purposes:

Purpose 1: To mitigate excess morbidity and mortality of conflict and post-conflict vulnerable populations through improved access to curative and preventive primary healthcare services in targeted provinces.

Purpose 2:  To reduce nutrition-related mortality and morbidity by providing nutrition services to vulnerable individuals and families, including IDPs and local communities in targeted provinces.

Purpose 3: To improve the safety, protection, and well-being of vulnerable communities, including women and children, and prevent the adoption of negative coping mechanisms.

Purpose 4: To reduce WASH-related morbidity and mortality by improving access to water, sanitation, and hygiene services to vulnerable individuals and families in the target provinces.

Job Purpose

To promote Optimal MIYCN practices and provide practical support for mothers in understanding and addressing any potential issues common to MIYCN; advise mothers on ECD

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Undertake growth monitoring and promotion (GMP) of all children under two years.
  • Conduct IYCF assessment for all caregivers with children below 2 years.
  • Conduct nutritional counseling to pregnant and lactating women and mothers/caregivers of all children under two years with breastfeeding and complementary feeding difficulties.
  • Address difficulties common among and lactating women and suggest culturally appropriate solutions to promote adequate breastfeeding.
  • Conduct education sessions within the facility to all caregivers on optimal maternal infant and young child nutrition (MIYCN) practices.
  • Support the OPD SAM nurse to conduct anthropometric measurement (weight, height MUAC and edema of all children 6-59 months.
    Classification of all under five children in category of normal, Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) and Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM).
    Refer to proper services based on classification to address nutritional status.
  • Identify pregnant and lactating women, form MTMSGs and conduct monthly meetings to educate them on optimal feeding practices.
  • Training and supervising lead mothers to support in facilitation within MTMSGs.
  • Plan and supervise food demonstration sessions within MTMSGs aimed to improve optimal complementary feeding practices.
  • Participate in mass MUAC screening at community level on quarterly basis.
  • Ensure recording of relevant MIYCN data and submission of monthly report to head of health facility or nutrition officer.

Job Requirements:

Qualification:

  1. Afghan National
  2. Graduated from high school.  
  3. Nutrition counselling, MIYCN and IMAM training.
  4. Understanding of community nutrition programming
  5. Knowledge of nutrition, health and child development
  6. Strong communication skills

Experience

  1. At least 1 year as counselor SAM nurse,  experience in nutrition, IYCF and early child development (ECD) programming

Competency

  1. Fluency in the local language; proficiency in English desirable
