About ASMO:

Afghan Social Marketing Organization (ASMO) is a social marketing and behavioral change communication organization established in August 2008. ASMO is a free-standing, not-for-profit Afghan organization that aims to create positive health outcomes by giving Afghan households the information they need to make informed and healthy choices and expanding access to high-quality health products through commercial markets.

From its inception to date, ASMO successfully implemented multimillion-dollar projects in Afghanistan through sub-awards sponsored by USAID focusing on improving maternal and child health outcomes through the private sector.

Job Descriptions:

The Executive Director serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Afghan Social Marketing Organization.  The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives and for sound program development and administration.

Executive Direction

  1. Assures that ASMO has a long-range strategy that achieves its mission and towards which it makes consistent and timely progress.
  2. Provides leadership in developing program, organizational, and financial plans with the Board of Directors and staff, and carries out such plans and policies as authorized by the Board.
  3. Maintains official records and documents on the organization’s activities and administration to ensure transparency and compliance with relevant donor requirements, and local laws and regulations.
  4. Maintains a working knowledge of significant developments and trends relating to social marketing and public information and other relevant fields.
  5. Plans and directs public relations and resource mobilization efforts of the ASMO.

Communications:

  1. Assures that donor organizations, the Board, and other key stakeholders are kept informed of the organization’s condition and important factors influencing it.
  2. Publicizes the organization’s activities, its programs, and goals and objectives.
  3. Establishes and maintains sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with international organizations, the Government of Afghanistan, and local community groups and agencies.
  4. Represents the program activities and the organization’s perspective to international agencies and organizations, and the local community.
  5. Directs the recruitment and release of all ASMO personnel.

Staff Relations:

  1. Works with the HR staff to ensure sound human resources management practices are in place.
  2. Ensures that an effective management team is in place to carry out sound program development and administration.
  3. Encourages development and education of management and staff, and, through the Director of Programs, ensures that program staff relate their specialized work to the organization’s overall program direction.
  4. Promotes and maintains a working environment that attracts, retains, and, motivates a diverse staff of highly qualified individuals.

Finance and Administration:

  1. Ensures development and maintenance of sound financial management practices.
  2. Ensures that the organization operates within the authorized budget.
  3. Ensures adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its work.
  4. Jointly with the Board of Directors, conducts official correspondence of the organization and executes its legal documents.
  5. Ensures that management and staff adhere to all ASMO administrative and operations policies and procedures.

Job Requirements:

Attainment of an MBA or other equivalent advanced degree in a related field 
A minimum of ten years of working experience in commercial sales and marketing preferably for health and pharmaceutical products, in  the private  sector, with at least five of which should be in a senior management/leadership capacity
At least 3 years of experience and/or familiarity with the private not-for-profit sector, social marketing, and social behavior change would be preferred 

Communication Skills:

Efficiently respond to questions from membership, staff, and members of the community; communicate effectively in both written and oral form 
Effectively present information to the membership, top management, public group, and/or board of directors.

Ability to make effective decisions in a timely manner in order to navigate challenges and position the organization for success 
Strong strategic thinking and management skills and abilities to consider the long-term goals of the organization and the broader business environment, analyze trends, identify opportunities and threats, and develop a plan that positions the organization to be result oriented and successful at scale
Possess strong emotional intelligence to manage relationships with employees, stakeholders, and customers
Possess transformation leadership skills and ability to create a vision for the organization that inspires and engages the employees, create an open, positive, participative, people-focused workplace culture and drive the organization forward
Possess growth mindset to develop people’s ability and intelligence, be adaptive and innovative in a constantly evolving business environment, pursue continuous learning and development, being resilient in the face of challenges and setbacks, create a culture of perseverance and determination

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  

Successful track record in fundraising, resource mobilization, and donor handling would be an advantage
Knowledge of   grant/contract administration and negotiation
Ability to plan organization-wide activities (setting objectives, developing strategies, budgeting, developing policies and procedures, and organizing the functions necessary to accomplish the activities)
Skills in staffing effectively; selecting, training, and developing employees; directing employees toward desired objectives; delegating, motivating, and resolving problems; and controlling the functions (developing performance standards, measuring results, taking corrective action, and rewarding employees as appropriate
