About Turquoise Mountain

Turquoise Mountain is a non-profit, non-governmental organization specializing in urban regeneration, business development, and education in traditional arts and architecture. We seek to provide education, skills and livelihoods to Afghan men and women. Since 2006 Turquoise Mountain has cleared 36,000 cubic meters of rubbish from the streets, restored or built 150 historic and community buildings, created a primary school and a clinic, and installed water, electricity, and sanitation through the historic traditional craft neighborhood of Murad Khani in the old city of Kabul. It has created the internationally accredited Institute for Afghan Arts & Architecture, training the next generation of craftsmen and women in woodwork, jewelry and gem cutting, calligraphy and miniature painting, and ceramics. Finally, it has sold over US$15,000,000 of Afghan artisan products internationally.

Job Description

Purpose of the Internship

The intern will support jewellery and embroidery and Carpet sampling, design documentation, and coordination with artisans. The internship also provides learning opportunities in design development, implementation of design concepts, and hands-on collaboration with supported beneficiaries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with design development for jewelry and embroidery and Carpet
  • Support coordination of online Moodle Classes (training will be provided)
  • Work with supported beneficiaries on following their assignments, guiding them through design steps, and supporting their creative process
  • Assist with scheduling meetings, workshops, and coordination sessions with artisans and design center staff
  •  Track progress of sampling and design development tasks, and update internal monitoring sheets or tracking tools
  • Prepare basic reports or summaries on design activities, sampling progress, and artisan coordination for the supervisor
  • Support inventory management for materials, tools, and supplies used in jewelry and embroidery and Carpet sampling
  • Help prepare materials and tools needed for workshops, training sessions, and design meetings
  • Assist with photographing, labeling, and archiving samples and prototypes for documentation purposes
  • Maintain communication with artisans about deadlines, task assignments, and follow-up requirements
  • Help maintain order and cleanliness in design workspaces and sample storage areas
  • Any additional design-related tasks assigned by the supervisor.

Job Requirements

  • Suitable for recent high school graduates or from vocational trainings or design with basic creative or design skills and familiarity with jewelry or embroidery or Carpet, no formal design education required, but interest and practical experience are essential.
  • Creative, organised, and detail-oriented
  • Ability to work collaboratively with artisans
