Project summary:

The Livestock Project will work with various anchor firms throughout the livestock sector to improve value chains to increase productivity in key livestock value chains, improve the commercial viability of agribusiness, and strengthen public private agriculture service delivery. The Livestock Project will seek to engage women and youth owned business in these livestock value chains. The Project will contribute positive and measurable impacts on the livestock sector as a whole and will ensure that local market actors are involved at every stage of the value chain.

Job Requirements:

The Business Productivity Improvement Manager will facilitate upstream and downstream relationships for the selected anchor firms. He/she will diagnose the constraints on business growth and develop a clear action plan to address these constraints. He/she will monitor the firms’ progress against clear benchmarks and help the Regional Manager to determine if the businesses are succeeding or failing. Additionally, the Business Productivity Improvement Manager will work to support the anchor firm in their efforts and provide a conduit for the provision of specialist expertise as required.

Objectives and Duties

  • Identification and building of positive linkage opportunities between selected anchor firms and suppliers of raw material.
  • Facilitate purchase agreements between supplies and selected anchor firms.
  • Encourage SME to invest resources in to smallholder farm production to support quality and reliable supply.
  • Identification and mobilization of innovative distribution channels, building on existing structures where feasible, e.g. informal retailers, community-based distributors, and franchisees through to larger domestic and international channels.
  • Diagnose constraints on business productivity for selected anchor firms.
  • In coordination with the value chain specialists, recommend a mix of activities to address the identified constraints for each of the anchor firms.
  • Together with the Portfolio Managers develop a measurement and reporting schedule for the recommended mix of activities and make recommendations to adapt program approach as necessary to maximize impact.
  • Coordinate with Ag Processing Technologies Advisor to facilitate processor access to appropriate technical assistance and business finance.
  • In collaboration with the Value Chain leads, provide technical input, with local service providers, on development of Trainings on informal marketing and retail approaches.
  • Contribute to project activities, planning, reports, and deliverables.
  • Other tasks as required by the Chief of Party.



  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Business or related area, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Five years of experience implementing donor projects, preferably in agriculture and enterprise market systems.
  • Previous experience working with SME’s in either an advisory or support role, preferably in the livestock sector.
  • Experience with agricultural commodities/product pricing and contract structures preferred.
  • Knowledge of and/or willingness to learn more about operational excellence best practices.
  • Fluency in English and relevant regional languages.
  • Ability to travel across Afghanistan.
