KRO is an Afghan organization that is committed to the development of the local economy and building local capacity for sustainable development.
The UNICEF-supported rural sanitation programme is implemented through the Health Promotion Department of the MoPH and through several NGOs. Since 2015, the Afghan Context Community-Led-Total-Sanitation was endorsed as the approach of choice to end open defecation in Afghanistan by 2025. This approach works towards making communities open defecation free and includes a hygiene behavioral change component which involves CDCs and Family Health Action Groups. To achieve an ODF Afghanistan by 2025, the CLTS outreach capacity has increased consistently since 2016 as more NGOs joined the movement, to cover the high-open defecation prevalence-provinces and districts. After starting in 2016, UNICEF continued to work with MRRD, MoPH and the six NGOs, to implement CLTS in rural communities.
