HI has been supporting the Afghan people since 1987, starting its operations in Pakistan. Since 1996, HI has been operating across Afghanistan in order to launch victim assistance interventions, working at different levels of the society and adopting a cross-sectoral approach. While present on the ground to directly support victims of the conflict through the provision of a range of services – from physical rehabilitation, to mine risk education and inclusive livelihoods – HI has been continuously advocating to increase the rights of victims and other people with disabilities in the country. In particular, and in line with its global strategy and priorities, HI has been advocating to reduce the use of landmines and conventional weapons. Acknowledging the need to respond to the urgent emergency crises combined with longer term, chronic gaps in the provision of services, HI has steadily expanded its range of activities and services in order to support the most vulnerable people, enhancing their resilience while strengthening participation and inclusion of all individuals.
Job Purpose:
The MHPSS Trainer plays a key role in building the technical capacity of Psychosocial Workers (PSWs) to ensure high-quality, safe, and context-appropriate MHPSS services for crisis-affected communities. The position focuses on identifying learning needs, designing and delivering relevant training packages, and strengthening the practical skills and confidence of PSWs through ongoing coaching, supervision, and field-based mentoring.
The role also contributes to improving the well-being and functional outcomes of individuals experiencing mental health concerns, psychosocial distress, or disabilities, particularly those whose conditions have been aggravated by emergencies. The Trainer supports PSWs in applying appropriate tools, approaches, and intervention methods, and collaborates in the development and adaptation of MHPSS materials suited to local realities and humanitarian constraints.
Based in Nangarhar, the position will provide technical support primarily to HI’s teams in the province and may extend to neighboring operational locations such as Kunar, depending on program priorities. Time spent across sites will be organized according to team needs, workload distribution, and project requirements.
The role involves regular field travel, including to remote and hard-to-reach areas, to accompany mobile and static teams and ensure consistent implementation of MHPSS standards, clinical protocols, and safeguarding principles. By strengthening staff competencies and supporting quality service delivery, the MHPSS Trainer contributes directly to the overall effectiveness and responsiveness of HI’s MHPSS programming.
